With nowhere else to go, 34-year old Fiq Said rolled up his sleeves during quarantine (Movement Control Order) and gave his bedroom an extreme IKEA makeover.
While nothing is “hacked” as we’re used to around here, the transformation is startling. It proves in true IKEA fashion, you just need to plan and pick your pieces well to set up a pleasant and inviting room.
“28 days worth of work during quarantine. The MCO got extended and IKEA is still closed,” he tweeted along with before and after pictures of his bedroom.
Netizens loved his almost all-IKEA, all-white transformation and has retweeted it more than 7,000 times. Play the video for a walk-through.
He told Says.com the makeover was long in coming and emphasised that it wasn’t a windfall that allowed him to refurbish his room.
He slept on a mattress on the floor and saved up for 5 years in order to afford all the IKEA pieces.
His first purchase was the 2-door ANEBODA wardrobes which served him well the last 5 years. Then he added the following to the room: (Prices in Malaysian Ringgit)
- STORA loft bed (RM1,299)
- MALVIK foam mattress (RM699)
- SONGESAND three-door wardrobe (RM999)
- LINNMON/ADILS/ALEX table (RM399)
- SKALBERG/SPORREN swivel chair (RM129)
- 2 TROFAST storage organisers (RM146 each)
He estimated about RM5,000 (approx. USD1140) spent for the furniture (including unlisted smaller items), paint, wiring and other materials to makeover the room.

Timing was on his side
His original plan was to makeover his room in time for Hari Raya (Eid al-Fitr). He bought, got IKEA Malaysia to deliver and set up the larger pieces like the loft bed and wardrobes. And then, the government announced the lockdown on March 18 and IKEA closed its stores. Lucky for him, he had all he needed to complete the makeover.
With all that time at home, he got to work scraping old paint off the walls, ceilings, window grilles and repainting them.
Take a look at these BEFORE photos followed by the AFTER. It’s 28 days of quarantine well spent.
And now enjoy the IKEA makeover: After!
