12 IKEA desk setups to inspire your home office

Tutorial for laptop desk

#1 Butcher block and ALEX

The classic. You can’t go wrong with the combo of an IKEA kitchen countertop (like this), an ALEX drawer unit and legs. Rug (in case you’re asking) is from Wayfair. IKEA used to have a similar one called LAPPLJUNG RUTA.

#2 MALM desk for 2

A variation from #1. This desk setup uses the MALM 3-drawer chest instead. And two smaller MALM nightstands as desk drawer units. And a KALLAX 2×4 as a divider and vertical storage.

#3 KLIMPEN under the stairs

Under the stairs is as good as spot as any to fit in a work station. Two KLIMPEN drawer units prop up a table top. Spray paint the metal label slots for a bit of contrast.

#4 Kitchen worktop and BESTÅ

For this set up, Lydia turned to the IKEA kitchen and BESTÅ range. The countertop with the concrete effect is an EKBACKEN. Again, the ALEX is seen here, blending beautifully with everything else.

#5 MICKE desk or vanity

A MICKE desk is always a good choice for a compact workstation. An EKBY ALEX shelf and drawers serves as a monitor stand and extra storage.

#6 ALGOT and SKÅDIS combo

Love this desk made from ALGOT upright and shelves with SKÅDIS pegboard. Clean, sleek and minimal.

#7 HEMNES desk and built-ins

Now this is what I call a home office. So gorgeous in every way. Amy and her husband turned the HEMNES units into built-in bookshelves. And the space is completed with a HEMNES desk.

#8 Tiny work space

Even if you have a tiny space, IKEA has your back. The MICKE desk is just slightly over 2 feet. It’s your best bet for a desk that will fit into a corner of the bedroom or living room.

#9 Desk setups on trestles

One of my favourite options — a table top on trestles. The ODDVALD trestles are striking as legs for this desk, possibly a LINNMON.

#10 LINNMON desk

This list wouldn’t be complete without IKEA’s most popular desk combination. LINNMON on ADILS legs. No fuss. It works.

#11 Can’t go wrong with LILLÅSEN desk

The LILLÅSEN desk is a beautiful piece, made from bamboo with metal legs. The slim profile means it can be tucked between windows or even behind a sofa.

#12 Dining table to work desk

The LERHAMN table hard at work in this work + craft station. If you need a deeper (29 1/8″) desk, dining tables are the way to go.

Sliding Bookcase Doors KALLAX hack to divide your rooms

I replaced single-glazed sliding doors that divided the sitting room and dining room with a sliding KALLAX bookcase. For one “door”, I used two 2×2 cubes and one 2×1 unit. As we already owned 4 separate KALLAX 2×2 cubes and they seemed to be exactly the same width as the internal doors, we thought it might be possible to stack them. With one additional 2×1 KALLAX they almost matched the height of the internal doors. Sliding KALLAX bookcase doors in closed position First, still a work in progress but let us show you how it looks from the dining room, when the units are pushed together to close up the doorway. And the units pushed apart to enter the living room. We can access the storage cubes from both sides — from the dining or living room — which is so very useful. What I like most is, when viewed from the living room, when closed, it looks almost like a built-in unit. IKEA item used: 2×2 KALLAX units x 4 1×2 KALLAX units x 2 Other materials: 3M mounting tape...
