IKEA stores with new format launched in NY & Singapore

New Year, new stores. But not a typical IKEA store.

IKEA is ramping up to transform their business to meet customers wherever they are and how they like to shop.

In 2020, we saw IKEA release new store concepts such as the convenience store concept in Harajuku and the second hand store in Sweden.

Now, we see two new formats, launched just days aparts in two different parts of the world.

A new IKEA opened in Queens tailored to the life of New Yorkers.

The new smaller IKEA store opened in the Rego Center Shopping Mall on January 11. This store is the first in the U.S. with a smaller format, covering 115,000 sq. ft. of space. However, shoppers will still be able to access IKEA’s full range of products.

“Every detail was created with the unique needs of New Yorkers in mind, from the proximity to public transportation and delivery and assembly options, to the wide product range curated specifically to meet their dynamic lifestyles,” said Shahab Mollaei, Market Manager, IKEA Queens, in a press release.

Shoppers will be able to purchase and take home portable home furnishing accessories, curated specifically for New Yorkers. Customers can set-up delivery for larger items for a flat rate fee of $49 to anywhere in New York City.

“As life at home has taken on a new meaning this year for so many people, our customers’ needs and behaviors are changing too,” said Javier Quiñones, President & Chief Sustainability Officer, IKEA Retail U.S. “And we hope our new Queens store will serve as a convenient and accessible source of inspiration and home furnishing expertise for New Yorkers.”

IKEA Queens is located at the Rego Center shopping mall at the corner of Queens Boulevard & Junction Boulevard. It’s just a block away from Q59 and Q60 bus stops and is right next to the 63rd Drive – Rego Park subway station, which is served by the M and R trains.

The store will be open daily from 10 AM-9 PM.

IKEA Planning Studio in Jurong Point offers move-in ready services

And in Singapore, the Swedish furniture chain IKEA has opened its first planning studio at Jurong Point.

Unlike traditional IKEA stores, the planning studio is powered by a Singapore-based interior design and renovation platform, Livspace.

The planning studio is smartly designed after a 3-room HDB flat home, measuring at around 100 square metres (approx. 1,000 sq. ft.). The rooms consists of a living room, dining area, master bedroom, kid’s bedroom, bomb shelter, bathroom, kitchen, and service yard.

According to a report on Mothership.sg, the planning studio goes beyond merely selling IKEA products. It offers customers end-to-end personalised home interior design, planning and renovation services.

Shoppers will also be able to get budget-friendly move-in ready packages which includes renovation, construction services and IKEA furniture and furnishings. Packages range from S$9,900 for a 2-room set-up to S$16,000 for a 5-room.

Sounds like a good deal.

Congratulations on the opening and good luck to both IKEA stores.

Hackers Help: How to remake cam lock holes?

I want to put a 78.5” wide PAX configuration in a 77” space for a kids room . My plan is to eliminate the drawer on the right unit, then cut the shelves and rails to be 1.5” narrower. My question is, how do people attach two laminated pressboard IKEA pieces after they’ve cut off the cam lock holes? Related: See more Hackers Help questions and answers . Are they using drills bits and/or tiny hole saws to remake the cam lock holes? Or screws drilled in from the outside with wood glue? The outside pieces won’t be visible in my completed setup so I could go either way. I’m curious what other people are doing, either I haven’t seen this detail in past hacks or I haven’t been paying attention. ~ by Jenny *** Hi Jenny The best and tidiest method is to use the cut-off portion as a template to reproduce the same cam lock holes in the correct positions. The right sized drill bits and a  Forstner bit should do the trick. A Forstner bit will drill a flat-bottomed hole (...
