To create a cozy atmosphere in the hallway and brighten up the space, I decided to hang up an IKEA NISSEDAL mirror. But after thinking about it further, I came up with the idea of hacking it into a lighted mirror to provide ambient lighting as well.
Here’s how the hallway looks with the mirror.
And voila! With lights.
It was a relatively easy hack and it took me not more than 1 hour to complete it.
IKEA items used:
- NISSEDAL mirror
- LEDFYR lighting chain
Other materials and tools:
- Hammer
- Cable wire clips with nail
- Cord cover + accessories
- Glue
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
Lighted mirror hack instructions:
With the measuring tape, measure the four sides of the back of the mirror.
Then, divide the space equally for the number of LED lights you have. Make a mark where the lights should go.
Insert the LED lights into the clips.
Then, position the cable clips with the LED light on the markings. With a hammer, gently hit the nail until the clip is fixed onto the back of the frame.
Add a dollop of glue to fix the LED bulb to the clip. Give it a test run to make sure all the light bulbs work.
After placing the mirror in the desired position, connect the cable to a socket, covering the wires with a cover.
And that’s it. Your lighted mirror is complete.
Cost
- Mirror €49,99
- LED light garland €8
- Cable clips with nail €3,25
- Cable cover €2,89
- Cover accessories €2,60
What to pay special attention to?
When fixing the clips into position, do not hit too hard with the hammer as you may break the mirror. And the nail of the clips, do not place it too near the edge of the wood frame to avoid chipping the frame.
See how I hacked the lighted mirror in this video.
