BEKVÄM kitchen cart goes rustic with rattan

The BEKVÄM kitchen cart is an item that many people have in their kitchen. I wanted to find a way to make it unique to my home. So I added cane webbing and made it a rattan cart.

I like how the combination of materials and colours turned out.

1. Sand the trolley and remove any dirt, spots and dust it may have collected.

2. Clean the trolley well from all the wood dust left over from the sanding, use a broad brush.

3. Choose a colour you would like to paint the trolley with. I went with a black water based paint suitable for wood and steel. Paint the trolley twice, wait 6 hours between the first and the second paint. Two layers of paint should be enough. Let the paint on the trolley dry overnight before you continue.

4. In the meantime, roll out the rattan cane and flatten it using heavy objects for at least 6 hours.

5. To know the exact size of the rattan you will need, measure the opening of the cart from the inside (on the sides where we will place the rattan, where the shelves lines are vertical) and add 3 extra cm to each side. My measurements were 40×70 cm.

6. We are attaching the rattan to the two sides where the shelves lines are vertical to us, it’s impossible to add it to the other 2 sides of the trolley. Place the rattan you cut on the side where we want to add it and push it inside carefully. You can use some hot water to soften the rattan. I recommend having a partner with you to help as this can be a bit hard for one person.

7. Use the staple gun to connect the rattan from the inside. Work from top to bottom and cut any extra rattan you have sticking out. Repeat the same thing with the rattan on the parallel side of the trolley.

How much time did it take and how much did it cost?

It cost me 73 dollars, excluding the staple gun which I had and the trolley itself. It took 2 days to complete.

What was the hardest part of the hack?

The hardest part was working with the rattan.

What to pay special attention to?

Make sure you are attaching the rattan to the correct side.

Hackers Help: How to attach headboard to ESPEVÄR mattress base?

I’m trying to figure out if a headboard can be attached to an Espevar Mattress Base , and how to accomplish that. I’m looking at a standard metal headboard (because I just prefer the look of curved metal to what IKEA offers) and am not interested in a slat base with just a mattress on top, and a wall mounted headboard is not an option due to renting. Thanks for any help! ~ Amy *** Hi Amy I’ve not seen the ESPEVÄR in person but I believe it is possible to attach a headboard to it. From the website, the ESPEVÄR looks like a regular wooden slatted mattress base under a bed base slipover. As to how to attach it, that will depend on the fittings on the metal headboard. So you will just need to get the right hardware to secure the metal headboard to the wooden frame. And make some small openings on the slipcover to let the fixtures to go through. SKÅDIS: 5 ways to make the IKEA pegboard even better

IKEA introduced its own pegboard system, SKÅDIS, two years ago and I’d say it’s one of the best systems IKEA launched in recent years. I love how super customisable it is, with a growing range of accessories that help keep things organized. It works everywhere, in your wardrobe to bathroom . Probably anywhere you have a flat surface to hang it up. Photo: IKEA.com SKÅDIS pegboard system See it on IKEA.com But no matter how perfect a system, you can trust IKEA hackers to improve on the SKÅDIS. And they’ve settle these 5 issues you may have faced with the handy IKEA pegboard. Read on for their fixes. 5 IKEA SKÅDIS issues and fixes #1 Expensive hooks? You’ll need quite a number of hooks and accessories to fill up the SKÅDIS pegboard, and Kenyer was shocked at how quickly they all added up. So he figured he could make his own hooks to save cost.
