Make a budget friendly LED TERTIAL work lamp

This is my hack of a TERTIAL work lamp.

After an extensive research for a suitable work lamp for my JERKER desk I realized, for the available (short) budget, I was going to have to, once again, postpone my goal.

But then I saw a round LED ceiling panel that I had for a previous project. (Around €17 at the time.) And I wondered … what’s the diameter of the light? It turned out to be 17 centimeters.

I remember that number from somewhere (the IKEA catalogue page was open). The diameter value is the same as the TERTIAL shade!

Hmmm… For €8 I will try to hack it and have a LED TERTIAL work lamp on a budget!

Challenge accepted!

Just to confirm that TERTIAL shade and LED panel would perfectly match:

To glue the two parts together I used a white polymer sealant (Soudal T-Rex Classic) and the result was quite promising.

I left it to cure 24 hours, as specified by manufacturer, and started to adapt the electrical connection with LED driver.

Unscrewed the plastic nut that held the wire.

Removed part of the light bulb socket.

And replaced it with the LED driver.

Inserted driver inside and tightened wire holding nut. There’s no need to glue it in!

That was it… The hack was done!

After the sealant curing time was over I plugged the driver to the panel and joined the shade with the rest.

Now I have a proper light to work with! I used it for some days and I can say that I’m pretty happy with the result.

This hack can also be helpful if you do YouTube videos (or photography), serving as a studio light source. For that matter I would suggest that you pick a dimmable LED panel.

I hope you enjoy this hack and that I’ve inspired you in some way…
