This is my hack to turn an IKEA KURA bed into a loft bed with crib under it.
My son was about 15 months when he started climbing out of his crib. It wasn’t safe but he was too busy to be contained in a crib.
He and my daughter already shared a room and my daughter already had an IKEA KURA bed.
We also had an old futon frame from IKEA which we no longer used. (I don’t remember the name of it.)
So putting two and two together, we decided to repurpose the futon frame to make a crib at the bottom of my daughter’s existing KURA loft bed.
IKEA items used:
KURA reversible bed | IKEA.com
Other materials:
- Wood (in my case a recycled futon frame)
- 2 swinging hinges
- 1 spring loaded hook and eye lock (make sure it is a spring loaded one for safety)
- 1 twin size mattress
Tools:
- Drill
- Saw
Loft bed with crib instructions
First, we secured a wood pillar to the bottom section of the KURA bed, dividing the opening into two halves.
Then, we using a saw we cut down to size one half of the futon frame.
We installed swinging hinges on it to make the door of our new “crib”.
Then, we secured the other half of the futon frame into the frame of the KURA bed to close it up the section on the right.

To close and lock the door we used a spring loaded hook and eye lock.
We put an IKEA twin mattress on the floor underneath the KURA bed. For added safety, the bed is secured against a wall.
And there you have a loft bed with a crib!
Simple hack using materials we already had.
Took about 2 hours to do and cost was under $20.00 because we already had most materials.
