Bottle lights spice things up: BEKVÄM luminaire

Your home bar needs this set of bottle lights!

LED luminaire in a bottle is based on a friend’s idea, but it was just a loose set of bottles and wires. The BEKVÄM spice rack adds the skeleton and makes it an actual portable bottle light.

IKEA items used:
Other materials and tools:
  • Four (4) colored bottles
  • LED lighting strip (12/24V DC), that can be cut every 5cm, and connector cables
  • 20W LED power supply (230V to 12 or 24V), power cable with switch
  • Some 2×0,75mm2 cable (red/black)
  • Wooden skewers
  • Wood glue

DIY bottle lights

Collect a set of coloured bottles. Get them in different heights and shapes to create more interesting bottle lights.

The next step is to wash the bottles, and let them dry thoroughly.

Then, use wood glue on the base of the bottles and position them as you wish on BEKVÄM spice rack. I chose to set my bottles evenly apart.

Cut LED strips according to bottle size and attach the connector cable to LED strip. (Keep an eye for polarity!)

Next, drill a hole in each bottle’s cap. It should be large enough for the connector cable to pass through. Carefully remove plastic valves from each bottle.

Put three wooden skewers in parallel as skeleton for LED, strip self-adhesive tape and attach so that the LEDs point to the rear. You don’t want the LEDs to be emitting light directly to the front of the luminaire, you want the light to diffuse at the back of the bottles.

Lastly, attach connector cables to power supply and power cable with switch.

How long and how much did it cost?

3-4 hours per luminaire. extra materials: around 40E

What do you like most about the hack?

Every instance is different. And it’s actually quite difficult to get hold of coloured bottles!

What was the hardest part about this hack?

Removing the plastic valves in bottle heads.

What to pay special attention to?

Some LED strips are NOT meant for cutting. Make sure you buy those that come with compatible connector strips!

Hackers Help: How to attach headboard to ESPEVÄR mattress base?

I’m trying to figure out if a headboard can be attached to an Espevar Mattress Base , and how to accomplish that. I’m looking at a standard metal headboard (because I just prefer the look of curved metal to what IKEA offers) and am not interested in a slat base with just a mattress on top, and a wall mounted headboard is not an option due to renting. Thanks for any help! ~ Amy *** Hi Amy I’ve not seen the ESPEVÄR in person but I believe it is possible to attach a headboard to it. From the website, the ESPEVÄR looks like a regular wooden slatted mattress base under a bed base slipover. As to how to attach it, that will depend on the fittings on the metal headboard. So you will just need to get the right hardware to secure the metal headboard to the wooden frame. And make some small openings on the slipcover to let the fixtures to go through.
