Kitchen island that hides away a secret compartment

Hidden storage in the kitchen island for, not one, but two foldable tables.

We built the house and used IKEA cabinets in the entire house — kitchen, baths, laundry.  We liked that we could install them ourselves.

Because we have an open format kitchen, we have no formal dining room.

So, we decided to make hidden storage in the kitchen island to store two 5-foot tables to use when we have large number of guests.

This whole kitchen is IKEA kitchen cabinets. For the island, we used metal brackets to extend the island for seating and cover up the box with IKEA cover panels. We used a small piano hinge for the door to the hidden storage area.

Once the cabinets for the kitchen island were installed, it didn’t take long to build the “hidden storage area”.  It was really pretty simple.

THE DESIGN

This is a typical Island made from IKEA kitchen base cabinets.  The Hide-A-Way is added along the back of the base cabinets. We used metal brackets to extend the counter for seating at the Island.

BUILDING

It’s basically a box built from 2x4s.

A piano hinge and a standard IKEA door was used for the opening.

A small magnet type door closer was added.

I used white “Auto Wrap”  to cover the 2x4s that you see when you open the door.

There are two 5-foot tables inside. The one that is pushed in the farthest has paracord tied on the leg, and is easy to slide out. The other end of the paracord is on a hook at the opening for easy reach.

When we have a large number of guests, we slide the two tables out and set them up. Instant dining room!

To complete the IKEA vibe, we also hacked the ORDNING utensil holder into pendant lights over the island.

IKEA introduced its own pegboard system, SKÅDIS, two years ago and I’d say it’s one of the best systems IKEA launched in recent years. Probably anywhere you have a flat surface to hang it up. You’ll need quite a number of hooks and accessories to fill up the SKÅDIS pegboard, and Kenyer was shocked at how quickly they all added up. So he figured he could make his own hooks to save cost. Hackers Help: How to remake cam lock holes?

I want to put a 78.5” wide PAX configuration in a 77” space for a kids room . My plan is to eliminate the drawer on the right unit, then cut the shelves and rails to be 1.5” narrower. My question is, how do people attach two laminated pressboard IKEA pieces after they’ve cut off the cam lock holes? Related: See more Hackers Help questions and answers . Are they using drills bits and/or tiny hole saws to remake the cam lock holes? Or screws drilled in from the outside with wood glue? The outside pieces won’t be visible in my completed setup so I could go either way. I’m curious what other people are doing, either I haven’t seen this detail in past hacks or I haven’t been paying attention. ~ by Jenny *** Hi Jenny The best and tidiest method is to use the cut-off portion as a template to reproduce the same cam lock holes in the correct positions. The right sized drill bits and a  Forstner bit should do the trick. A Forstner bit will drill a flat-bottomed hole (...
