From STORÅ loft bed to double bunk bed for 4

Our weekend house is quite small (only 20 m2), so I needed a space saving, fast solution in order to have a double bunk bed option without overcrowding the house.

Other materials and tools:
  • Mitre saw
  • Drill
  • Pencil/marker
  • Measuring tape

STORÅ loft to bunk bed instructions: 

Open the first STORÅ loft bed packages. Next, I cut the 4 bed legs into the desired length. (Our weekend house has only 240cm ceiling height, IKEA suggest min. 270cm). Note: This step is only needed if your ceiling height is less than 270cm.

In order to achieve maximum accuracy, we used a mitre saw. I cut 10cm, but my recommendation would be 20-25cm for more head room at the top bunk.

Start to build the bed, but instead of using the lower slat, use the other sides upper part (see picture).

Drill the missing holes for the lower part.

I used as an orientation the pre drilled holes (in my case the lower slat was oriented to the pre-drilled holes).

If you have more than 270cm ceiling height you may fix the upper slat to the pre drilled holes.

Then, open the second loft bed package and repeat the modification on the other 2 legs (drilling), use the slats from the second loft beds package.

Follow the final assembly instructions of IKEA but instead of building only the upper bed, continue with the lower bunk too.

Attention: Please make sure that you don’t screw in the bolts completely, otherwise it is not possible to assemble the bed.

Tighten every screw.

How long and how much did it cost?

All in all the building time of our double bunk bed was 7 hours. (From the total, it took around 4 hours to modify the structure.)

Cost: The only cost were the purchase of 2 STORÅ loft beds

What do you like most about the hack?

We are a family of 4 (with 2 little children), with the usage of only 140x210cm space we all can sleep in comfort.

The advantage of this setup is that the lower bed also has it’s “guard rail” function, so no children will fall out during sleep 🙂

What was the hardest part about this hack?

Due to the unusual structure, the assembly needed patience and concentration.

What to pay special attention to?

You need precise cutting and drilling in order to achieve the desired stiffness and robustness.

Looking back, would you have done it differently?

Maybe I would cut more from the legs (instead of 10 cm I would cut 20cm) in order to have more headroom in the top bed.

And other thoughts/ comments that you have received about the hack

Everybody said it looks like factory made furniture. We can say that it is positive feedback. What do you think?

From the website, the ESPEVÄR looks like a regular wooden slatted mattress base under a bed base slipover. As to how to attach it, that will depend on the fittings on the metal headboard. Kitchen renovation reveal: Rhombus wall steals the show

IKEA sofa with genius armrest storage

Bet you never knew your sofa armrests were prime storage space. Ok, so the guys at IKEA are the masters of hidden / secret storage everywhere. In fact, one of the things I most loved about the  ESKILSTUNA sofa series was the undercover storage on the chaise lounge, but… what? More than 80 liters of storage space wasted on the armrests? NO WAY! I really don’t understand how they didn’t take that opportunity with several different armrest modules. Mobile chargers, cup / can holders, foldable tables, refrigerators… there’s SO MUCH space in there. I can’t stop thinking on different options! For myself, I went for two designs.
