3 unique ways IKEA BILLY was used for toys & storage

The BILLY bookcase is one of those things that just works. We seen loads of hacks for the BILLY and you can browse them all here. But in this post, we zoom in on three unusual ways you can use the BILLY bookcase for toys and toy storage.

Industrial BILLY bookcase with hidden toy bed

My sons room is tiny and he wanted a toy bed so I tried to think of a way to make one without taking up too much space. I came up with this idea of an industrial style BILLY bookcase. The bottom pulls out into a bed during the night, similar to a Murphy bed, but for teddy.

I painted the unit in black, applied pins and metal wax to front to get the industrial look. I made a custom door for the front.

Materials:
  • IKEA Bookshelf (likely the old discontinued Flärke). You can do the same with a BILLY bookcase.

I bought an IKEA bookshelf and it didn’t really match the decor of my home.

I wondered what I could use it for and came up with this idea of using it for toy storage in my kid’s room.

First thing I did was turned the bookshelf on its side and reinforced the shelves with screws.

Then, I bought an 1x10x8 board and cut it into different size pieces and screwed them into the shelves sideways.

Lastly, I primed, painted and hung the “bookshelf” on the wall in my kid’s playroom for books, bins and toys! It turned out adorable and was a very cheap flip!

A beautiful design idea for the IVAR cabinet with doors

A wall of IVAR cabinets with doors engraved is astonishingly captivating. Because IVAR is real solid wood (unlike a lot of flat-pack cupboards), it makes a great blank canvas for CNC machining work and engraving. IKEA items used: IKEA IVAR cabinets in 30mm (12″) and 50mm (20″) depths. It’s not too difficult to shorten some in order to fill a wall exactly. I shortened the top row to 695mm and reduced the depth of the middle column to 40mm to create a 50/40/30 sequence so that I didn’t block the window but maximised storage capacity. Take a drawing, trace it in Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator into a black-only flat design. You can simplify the path at this point to reduce the time needed to engrave. Chop up the drawing in Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator into door-sized sections. Save as an SVG. Import the ...
